Some things I've learned along the way:

There is no one way to recover. We are unique, and our recovery should recognize that. What worked for me might not work for you. What works for me is nature, meditation, yoga, rock climbing, playing music, outdoor exercise, journaling, and gratitude.

Getting clean and sober is hard, but life doesn't get easier once we stop using substances. Since I stopped, I've had a friend commit suicide and lost many others to their addictions. I've been in numerous abusive relationships and been homeless multiple times. I've been married and divorced and sold a house I loved to move back with my parents. I've also had numerous beautiful experiences I hope to outline using social media and blog posts moving forward.

When I quit, I lost all the things alcohol was to me: my best friend. My higher power. My muse. My hobby. My coping skill. My partner. If we think we can give up substances and replace these holes in our soul with only one thing, I think we're kidding ourselves. We need a holistic approach to recovery to heal each of these areas.

I've found comfort intentionally choosing moderation and discipline with things like people, food, and pushing myself. It's freeing to tell myself no, not now, maybe later, or this is enough.
